Last week we saw God finish his work, call it very good, and rest. This week we see how God relates to the man he has made. He plants a garden, gives Adam work to do, and gives him a word: every tree is his to enjoy except one. The Bible has a name for an arrangement like that, a covenant, and grasping it changes how we read the rest of Scripture. Adam broke that covenant and brought death; Jesus kept it perfectly in our place, so all who trust him receive the life Adam forfeited.
