Next Service

Sunday 11am, 3rd of September, 2023   (53 Gardenia St, Blackburn)

A message from Rev. Graeme Bradbeer

Dear Friends

Years ago I saw an ATO listing of the 100 most common spellings of the word ‘Presbyterian’ - All by people who said they were Presbyterian! If you don’t know where the name Presbyterian comes from you should tune in tomorrow.

Also, what can we learn from a tale of two de Havilland aircraft? Tune in for that too...

The notes for tomorrow's sermon are here.

Actually, wait! Tomorrow is our Communion service. If you can, you should be there to participate. Physical engagement in this ‘means of grace’ can benefit your soul.

Here is the leaflet.

I have repeated the notice of our absence from September 24 until November 5. We will be away six Sundays. It is encouraging how willing people are to step in and help out. Thank you to those who have.

The supply roster is included, as well as the kind offer of Rev Grant Lawry to provide any needed urgent pastoral care that may be required.

You will notice there is no Young at Heart this week. Alas, Christine has Covid. She tested positive this afternoon and is hoping to start antiviral meds tomorrow.

NB Please note the Annual General Meeting of the congregation will take place after the service on 10 September.

Blessings in Christ.
Graham

No confidence in the flesh-Are we there yet? (Philippians 3:1-12)

Prelude: In the song at the heart of this letter reminds us that God’s redeeming purpose came to us through the unfathomable self-denial of Jesus, the Beloved, for which the Father raised and exalted Him in ineffable glory. There is no other basis on which a person may claim to be in the ‘right’ with God. It begins and ends with the love of God, revealed  in Jesus Christ. With St Paul, we have ‘no confidence in the flesh’! (v.3)

The Philippi Letter #2 Carmen Christi (Philippians 2:1-12)

The heart of the letter to the Philippians is this amazing text. It’s all about Jesus. Ralph P Martin describes this section of Paul’s letter as Carmen Christi .In Latin, Carmen means song, but whether a song or a poem we cannot be dogmatic. But there is no doubt that these few verses provide us with a lyrical key to shape Christian thinking about the person and work of Jesus. This great picture of Jesus our Saviour God is well worth learning off by heart.
